Our recent project showcases how thoughtful design and skilled craftsmanship can turn a challenging space into a functional, beautiful part of the home. We were approached by a client looking to make their large rear extension a truly usable space, where the existing structure was struggling to meet their needs. With its wooden roof and surrounding glazing, the extension retained little warmth during the winter and overheated in the summer. Additionally, the bulky wooden structure obstructed the view into the garden, limiting the aesthetic appeal and enjoyment of the outdoor surroundings.
We began by working closely with a trusted local building team to refine the design, incorporating a solid tiled roof and additional brickwork. This gave the home extension a more substantial feel and connected it seamlessly to the main property, transforming it from an unused area into a fantastic room suitable for year-round use.
With the property nestled in picturesque countryside, surrounded by mature trees and a flowing stream at the back of the garden, it was essential to select glazing that embraced these views. Initially, the client considered matching the cottage-style windows of the main house, finished in Chartwell Green, to retain a traditional look. However, we recommended an alternative approach to highlight this rear extension as a unique addition to the home.
Opting for aluminium frames in a timeless matt black finish provided a contemporary contrast against the existing cottage-style windows, enhancing the architectural character of the extension. The slender, sharp sightlines of aluminium allowed our window installers to maximise the window sizes, creating expansive views of the garden while minimising any obstructions.
One of our primary goals was to create an inviting space that visually connected the interior with the surrounding landscape. Large picture windows were a natural choice, and aluminium windows proved ideal, with its slim profile enabling larger apertures and unbroken sightlines. This design choice not only enhanced the natural beauty of the garden but also bathed the interior in abundant natural light, fostering a seamless indoor-outdoor feel.
After finalising the design and specifications, our team carried out a meticulous survey to ensure every detail matched the planned interior finishes. We took care to account for elements like flooring, allowing for seamless progression to the next phases of the project once the glazing was installed. Our team’s expertise in collaborating with various contractors ensured that all preparatory work was handled to the highest standards, achieving the specified build quality and finish.
The installation phase proceeded flawlessly, with our skilled team fitting the custom aluminium frames into the extension. The result surpassed our client’s expectations, fulfilling her vision of a versatile, aesthetically pleasing space.
